Wrocław Spa Center
PIANO — among the historic facades of Wrocław, a simple building form, clean lines, a dialogue of black and white — architecture that breathes.
And just a few steps away… architecture that remembers.
Only a 5-minute walk from PIANO lies a place where Wrocław has been learning to relax for over a century. Within walls that once saw a city without the Grunwald Bridge or the Centennial Hall, echoes of old conversations, laughter, and the sound of water still resonate.
Modern complex
And so, in 1897, on Teatralna Street, a modern bathing and swimming complex designed by Wilhelm Werdelman was built. Initially intended exclusively for men, it quickly became an important part of city life. Here, gentlemen discussed business, politics, and everyday matters, warming themselves in steam baths and drinking beer from a nearby brewery.
A place of recreation
When women also wished to benefit from bathing, the complex was expanded in 1907 with a separate women’s swimming pool, a distinctive tower, and a sauna area. In the 1920s, additional Turkish baths, bathtub baths, and a restaurant were added. In 1928, one of the pools was adapted for sporting competitions, and soon the facility became not only a place of hygiene, but also a hub of meetings, recreation, and social life in Wrocław.
